A Short Introduction

Tsurucon is a non-profit organization that focuses on creating an all-inclusive community that helps support the local fandom, Asian culture, and pop culture interests within Red Deer, Alberta. The main event we host is an annual convention that brings in hundreds of attendees to celebrate their passions and hobbies. Our principal goal is to create a safe place for people of all ages, backgrounds, and genders as well as to provide an open, accepting environment for people to express themselves and find confidence in who they are as individuals. All of our staff, including our board, are volunteer based.

Tsurucon started in 2012 as an idea between a group of high school students who loved going to cons and wanted to bring that much beloved experience to their local community. Through careful planning and relentless dedication, Tsurucon had its first ever convention on March 8th, 2014. Throughout the years, Tsurucon has grow immensely and has become so much more than the small dream it started as. We cannot wait to continue to grow and create even more of a positive impact on our local community.

Core Values

We initially started this convention as a way to bring a very accepting, well celebrated culture into our small city. As frequent con-goers and cosplayers ourselves, we really love and cherish the con community and the people involved in it. It was important to us to make sure that individuals living in Red Deer and the surrounding area also had the opportunity to experience it.

Our main goal is to provide a safe and welcoming environment for our attendees. This of course means that the safety and comfort of our attendees comes first and foremost. We take great pride in selecting our volunteers and staff members, in order to make sure that discrimination or harassment of any kind is a non-issue, and that all groups may enjoy themselves at our event.

Cosplay ≠ Consent

The Cosplay ≠ Consent and Cospositivity campaigns are very important to our convention and have influenced our convention policies. Both Pop-culture conventions and the cosplay community should be a warm, welcome environment for individuals of all ages, skill levels, and talents. Please be sure to always ask permission to take photos of others and make sure to be respectful to attendees around you.
